Creating the mighty hurricane—A Saga, Pt. 1

Right before our debut at NYIGF Dunes decided we needed a giant glass hurricane. He thought it would be perfect on a big table in an entryway or by the pool or even in a garden setting. The hurricane is almost three feet tall and two feet across and we quickly learned you just don’t create glass that big. Dunes searched nationwide to find anyone who could blow glass that big. It’s possible, just not economically feasible given it takes almost eight people to accomplish it. So he found some other people who have some talent with glass (who I think he likes to keep quiet about and I don’t want to be in trouble). Let me tell you, it’s still expensive, but it’s absolutely magnificent. See for yourself.

Of course where I really love it is in the garden.

The two large pieces of glass are held together by a giant leather hinge that Dunes designed and made. The hurricane can be opened and is held closed by a leather clasp with walnut bolts. It’s just too yummy!
